On average, Swedes are drinking 3.7 cups of coffee a day and may thus in itself about 370 grams of caffeine. For most Swedes are therefore coffee is a daily event, but how does this affect the body much?

The risk of suffering for caffeine intoxication, according to FDA almost nonexistent. In contrast, a high intake of caffeine cause indigestion in the form of nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. Other effects caused by caffeine can be insomnia, headaches, anxiety, dizziness and palpitations.

Chemically, caffeine is a methylated xanthine. It stimulates the central nervous system, has a stimulating effect and increases mental activity. It does not affect the intellect or learning ability. Coffee can be a good way to achieve more concentration, but to consider is that a high daily caffeine intake can lead to tolerance to certain pharmacological effects. This means that if the daily dose of caffeine fails, it can cause headaches, insomnia, attention deficit and other withdrawal symptoms. Nevertheless, coffee is not considered to be addictive because there is no bodily needs when the problems well gone over.

The coffee came to Sweden in the late 1600s, but only in small amounts because it was counted as a pharmacy to be. During the 1700s began to drink coffee as a beverage on the so-called coffee houses in Stockholm. Then it was coffee exclusively, a beverage for the upper class and upper middle class and drunk almost exclusively by men. Only in the 1800s, the coffee drunk by the public in Sweden, and today it is one of the countries where people drink the most coffee in the world.
